PEMF Therapy for Sleep (Ultimate Guide)

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is known to improve some sleep disorders through a process called brainwave entrainment (or neuro-entrainment). In this article, we will discuss the most important things to know about PEMF therapy and why this unique treatment may help some people who suffer from sleeping disorders.

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy has the ability to reboot the brain through the administration of low-frequency waves. This stimulation mimics the brain’s frequency during a deep sleep cycle, thus improving the ability for the brain and body to actually fall asleep.

Currently, about 1 in 5 American adults (about 25 million people) suffer from at least one type of sleeping disorder. Sleep is essential for our body to “reset” itself and to properly function over time. Without getting an adequate amount of good sleep every night—which is generally about eight hours per night for adults—you will likely end up enduring a wide variety of connected health issues. Because sleep disorders are so common across the United States (and elsewhere around the world), countless researchers have been exploring alternative treatments for sleeping disorders, including PEMF devices.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), “Insufficient sleep is a public health epidemic.” This problem, while measurably common across all demographics, is one that many people tend to ignore. Having a single night of bad sleep may not necessarily produce any long-term negative consequences. But having insufficient amounts (or quality) of sleep over an extended period of time can create countless mental health, physical, and chemical complications.

Traditionally, many doctors have been eager to prescribe sleep medications to their patients. But while sleeping pills may be effective for some people, others found they had no effect or—in some cases—found that the pills caused their ability to sleep to be even worse. There are more than 80 sleep disorders that are currently recognized by mainstream psychologists. Because many of these sleep disorders overlap with one another, finding perfect treatments can often be quite complicated.

The emergence of the “alternative” medicine movement has been far from surprising. While some new products have been introduced to reduce the cost of medical treatments, others have been introduced in order to increase the effectiveness of a given treatment program. One common alternative treatment is known as pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (also known as PEMF therapy).

Lack of Sleep: The Risks

Sleep trouble can be caused by many factors. Finding the direct cause of the problem will help you avoid the potential dangers correlated with poor sleep. If someone is not getting at least 7 hours of steady or deep sleep per night, there are many negative impacts that can be associated, such as:

  • Decreased Cognitive Function
  • Enhanced Risk of Accidents or Serious Health Problems
  • Quicker Aging of Cells and Slower Cell Regeneration
  • Increased Forgetfulness or Memory Loss
  • Impairment of Judgement
  • Reduced Libido

These negative effects can heavily influence your daily life. Sleep is a vital aspect of general health and well being.

Brain Frequency Rhythms And The Sleep Cycle

Brainwaves are measured in Hertz because they are naturally occurring electromagnetic fields that are produced by neuronal activity. These Hertz determine what frequency band is occurring within the brain at any given time. The brain has targeted frequencies and rhythms it should be functioning at during certain times of the day, which also correlates with our state of consciousness. For example:

  • During the beginning moments of the day, when we first wake up, we will be in the Alpha frequency, which lies between 8Hz-14Hz. This frequency also occurs when you are closing your eyes before drifting off into sleep.
  • When we are fully awake and alert, our brain should be performing at its highest frequency level (Beta), which is between 14Hz-30Hz.

The brain frequencies that dominate the sleep cycle are referred to as:

Theta (Light Sleep or REM): 4Hz-8Hz

  • Theta is a relatively light period between being awake and asleep. This is typically when dreams occur. It is common in the early stages of falling asleep and before waking up.

Delta (Deep Sleep or NREM): 0.5Hz-4Hz

  • The Delta-Rhythm stage is very significant as it is the time that the body can heal, balance, and build immunity. Delta waves are responsible for the NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) portion of the sleep cycle, which accounts for about 80% of sleep time in adults.

If the brain is performing at different Hertz frequencies than the designated levels above, then we are not completing these cycles to their best potential. This means we cannot benefit from our sleep nearly as much. Hertz levels can be affected by many things, such as stress and other external factors like mobile phones

How Do PEMF Devices Induce Sleep or Rest?

PEMF Therapy can specifically target brain frequencies that interrupt sleep wave patterns. This process is referred to as neuro-entrainment and helps synchronize the external frequencies of the PEMF device with the internal frequencies of the brain. With this method, we can coax the brain into following the desired rhythms for sleep.

Since the primary goal of sleep is to have the brain enter the Delta frequency stage, PEMF devices can also be thought of as a Delta Enhanced Entrainment Program (D.E.E.P.). This program focuses on persuading the brain to follow a Delta frequency for sleep. Since the Delta stage can sit anywhere between 0.5Hz and 4Hz, it may take some time to discover which Hz level that best fits with your brain’s preferences. Research has shown that using a continuous single-frequency throughout the night usually works best for training the brain versus changing frequency over time.

Do PEMF Devices Help With Sleep?

Although PEMF therapy is not proven to help with all sleeping disorders, there have been studies conducted in which insomnia subjects experienced significant improvement in their sleep issues after receiving pulsed electromagnetic field therapy.

Sleep can become disrupted when there are imbalances of any kind in the body. Often these imbalances are related to misfired frequencies that do not allow the brain to function optimally, particularly during sleep. The administration of PEMF therapy to the brain can assist in regulating the frequency-imbalances that are occurring and essentially reset the brain’s rhythm or Hertz level when it comes to sleep. This reset results in better quality and more full-cycle sleep. Whether you struggle with getting to sleep or have trouble staying asleep, PEMF therapy can be a great natural treatment option for you.

Should I Use my PEMF Device to Treat Sleep Disorders?

PEMF Therapy can be a wonderful way to naturally retrain the brain into following desired sleep patterns. Whether PEMF Therapy will be the most effective method for addressing your specific sleep disorder will depend on a variety of factors. The type of disorder, the causes of the disorder, and the way you personally experience the disorder (not all insomnia is experienced identically) will all be very important.

Talk to your doctor if you are considering introducing the use of PEMF devices into your routine. However, because these devices have no known adverse side effects, it is very likely they’ll approve your use of at-home PEMF therapy.

Conclusion – PEMF Therapy for Sleep Disorders

Research has concluded that the use of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can improve some sleep disorders. Brain waves play a large role in the ability to fall asleep and the overall quality of sleep. By using a PEMF machine to simulate proper brain frequencies for sleep, you may be able to improve your deep sleep cycles and reduce the risk of sleep-related accidents, injuries, depression or other issues.

Orthopedic surgeons in the U.S. have used Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields therapy

Orthopedic Surgeons focus on all things musculoskeletal by definition. With pulsed electro magnetic field therapy offering so many healing benefits for the body, it is a great treatment to couple with orthopedic practices. In an interview with Dr. C. Andrew L. Bassett, he notes that approximately 10,000 of the 12,000-plus orthopedic surgeons in the U.S. have used pulsed electromagnetic fields on at least one patient. This adds up to around 65,000 patients nationwide.

Not only can PEMF provide relief for newer or chronic injuries, but it can also be used as an aid during surgery recovery.

Chronic Injuries

PEMF can be used as an electrotherapeutic treatment in these cases. When pulsed electro magnetic field therapy is applied to an area of chronic pain it can increase the circulation which will reduce inflammation, regenerate damaged tissue, and decrease intensity of pain itself. This can be used following the onset of a ‘flare up’ to target sources of discomfort.

New Injuries

PEMF therapy has been shown to reduce inflammation and pain in new injuries while also improving overall healing time. For an injury that does not require surgery, pulsed electro magnetic field therapy can be a great way to promote healing and reduce recovery time. We touch on this in our “Does PEMF Therapy Work” blog.

Surgery Recovery

Surgery recovery can be joined with the ‘new injury’ sector as it is a fresh wound to the body that needs support. There can be many weeks to months of rehabilitation required with some orthopedic related procedures. Pairing PEMF with recovery can improve pain levels, inflammation and healing time.

Conclusion

If you are suffering from orthopedic related injuries or discomfort, looking into pulsed electro magnetic field therapy could be a great source of relief for these ailments. Pulsed Harmonix offers a selection of professional devices and options for at-home use. For more information, contact us

Is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Effective for Pets and Animals?

What is good for humans is also good for animals. In fact, the benefits of PEMF therapy are documented in multiple peer-reviewed clinical studies for a wide range of medical conditions.  The short answer to is pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) effective for pets is yes.

In the 21st Century, people and animals are continually exposed to damaging electromagnetic fields (EMF), limiting their exposure to Earth’s vital pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF).

Soviet Researcher, Georges Lakhovsky, noted cells are equipped with biological receivers that react to every stimulus in the environment stating, “Every cell is stimulated by the resonating interaction of the rhythmical flow of electromagnetic currents.”

Pulsed Harmonix’s TruePulse A2000® releases a series of carefully-timed pulses that closely resemble earth’s naturally occurring PEMFs, revitalizing body tissue at the cellular level.

Dr. William Pawluk speaks out about the healing properties for dogs, cats, horses and other animals using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF). PEMF has been FDA-approved to fuse broken bones and has been cleared in certain devices to reduce swelling and joint pain.  PEMF creates a powerful electrical magnetic field that extends approximately 5 feet in circumference from the device. Tissues including blood cells, muscle, ligaments, tendons, bone and cartilage respond to electromagnetic fields as they sweep through the body.

According to Dr. Pawluk new studies show that with the proper field intensity and frequency, treatment with PEMF appears to be life-changing.

Many animals receiving PEMF treatments such as dogs, cats, and horses with joint pain, arthritis, hip dysplasia, and other aches and pains have shown great improvement in their mobility.

Considered a wonderful new natural healing alternative to surgery, PEMF is changing the way people are helping their beloved pets feel better and live longer.

How Far Does Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Penetrate the Body?

In order to measure how far the magnetic field extended from the device, we used a magnetometer.  Specifically, we used a Nikken magnetometer (see photo).  This magnetometer isn’t calibrated so it doesn’t show gauss (a unit of magnetic induction).  However, it does show the relative intensity at different distances and power settings visually.

We tested the A2000 device with the spiral coil Mat applicator.   Here is what we found:

At a mid-power setting, the magnetic field extends approximately 2.5 feet in all directions from the center of the Mat and approximately 5 feet at the full power setting. This eliminates the need for a full-body Mat.
magnetometer

From all 4 sides of the Mat applicator, the magnetometer measured PEMF from 2.5’ away.

So if you apply the Mat to the center core of your body, front or back, the magnetic field will be focused on your core vital systems and will still extend well over the top of your head and well past your feet depending on the power setting.

Of course the power of the pulse decreases with distance from the applicators.

Part of what makes the Pulsed Harmonix A2000 an incredible value is the power it generates for such a compact device.  The magnetometer photo and measurements above show how that power helps the PEMF penetrate through the body.

How Pulsed Harmonix’s A2000 Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Device Works

You may be curious how the Pulsed Harmonix A2000 Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) device works?  In this post we’ll answer questions about the energy and delivery of the healing effects of our device.

How the True Pulse A2000 Works:

The FDA-Approved A2000 pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) device produces a magnetic field in its applicator coils that varies over time, pulsing like a heartbeat to provide a therapeutic effect.

The Magnetic Field:

The A2000s applicator coil produces the magnetic current behind each pulse, a microprocessor times the current, and the user adjusts the intensity via the control panel.

Current & the Magnetic Field:

The magnetic field is proportional to the current in the applicator wire: a zero current results in zero fields, and a high current produces a high magnetic field; double the current, and you double the field.

Adjusting Intensity:

To adjust the intensity of each pulse, select the intensity “Increase” or “Decrease” buttons on the A2000 control panel. The energy needed to drive each pulse accumulates at a constant rate, and the energy of each pulse is proportional to the time between pulses, i.e., the longer the time between pulses, the stronger the pulse.

The Gentle “Clicking” Sound:

The peak current in each pulse causes the coil wires to slap together creating a light ticking sound. These pulses are brief, lasting 1 to 2 thousandth of a second, regardless of intensity.

Binding the Coils

By design, only the applicator’s coil has a strong directed magnetic field; the twisted leads do not have a significant field since they are close together and the flow of current is opposite in each lead, canceling the magnetic field. The coil’s field strength is proportional to the number of wire turns forming the coil, e.g., double the turns and you double the field, all-else being equal.

Heat Production:

During pulsing operation, the higher the pulse current, the higher the heat produced in the copper wire: double the current and four times as much heating energy goes into the applicator. The longer the pulsing, the warmer the applicator coil will get. It never gets hot but it warms to the touch. This can be soothing heat for the application area, similar to a heating pad.

Optimal Intensity:

When using PEMF therapy for the first time, it is important to begin at a low level, as every person responds differently. Initial users are encouraged to use the default Level 3 Intensity for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening for three days before increasing the strength and duration of sessions.

Session Duration:

Most users easily tolerate up to an hour of treatment. High intensities have a pronounced impact on inflammation, and the histamine response to injury. Higher intensities also allow for shorter sessions.  For a given outcome, higher intensity often enables a shortening of the session time.

Dual Usage:

When two people are using the same device, higher intensities, e.g. three steps higher, will evenly distribute the shared energy.  This is accomplished by utilizing the dual applicator.
